Students's Motivation On Online Learning Affects Their Academic Outcome
By: Academia PH
According
to Cherry (2020) the method of initiating, guiding, and maintaining
goal-oriented activities is known as motivation. It's what motivates you to
take action, whether it's having a drink of water to quench your appetite or
reading a book to learn something new. The molecular, mental, social, and
cognitive powers that trigger actions are all part of motivation. The word
"motivation" is widely used in daily speech to explain why someone
does something. It is the energy that propels human behavior.
There are two types of motivation
Hennesey, et. al., (2015). Intrinsic motivation is the desire to do things only
for the sake of doing so, for the pure pleasure of doing so. Extrinsic
motivation, on the other hand, is motivation to achieve an objective purpose or
satisfy an externally defined constraint. Given the rise of the information
economy, cultivating intrinsic motivation in adults is particularly critical.
An internally driven condition has long been related to feelings of
self-determination, autonomy, and satisfaction. Extrinsic orientation is
engendered as environmental pressures such as the imposition of time limits, a
desired incentive, or an imminent appraisal negate feelings of
self-determination.
Moreover,
Deci & Ryan (1985) defined Extrinsic motivation is described as action that
is motivated by a monetary incentive. It's an example of operant conditioning
in action. Operant conditioning is a type of behavior change in which
incentives or consequences are used to improve or decrease the risk of such
behaviors recurring. Rewards or other prizes — such as recognition, fame, or income
— are used as inspiration for individual actions of extrinsic motivation.
External stimuli, rather than inherent motivation, motivate this type of
motivation.
On
the other hand, Intrinsic motivation is described as actions motivated by
intrinsic incentives. To put it another way, a person's desire to partake in an
action comes from inside because it is inherently rewarding to them. Extrinsic
incentive, on the other hand, means engaging in an action in order to receive
external incentives or escape retribution. When they behave
without any apparent outward incentives, this is known as intrinsic motivation.
We will simply enjoy an experience or see it as an opportunity to learn,
develop, and realize our full potential (Deci & Ryan, 1985).
According
to Wettergren, (2018), in all modes of education, motivation of students is
significant, Even more so in remote education, when students are working alone.
The study indicates that motivational elements may be separated into two
categories: (1) course method and structure, and (2) life circumstances and
personal characteristics. Both categories can influence motivation in both
positive and bad ways.
As
stated by (Hartnett, 2016), Motivation has been found to play a significant
impact in determining whether a student completes a course, the level of
devotion displayed, the kind of the work created, and the level of achievement
attained. Understanding the essence of motivation and the aspects in which
learners' motivation may be affected by personal backgrounds, social
influences, experiences and circumstances.
According
to Cakir Karademir Erdogdu, (2018), their study shows a strong correlation
between the motivation rate of the students and their online learning
experiences and happiness was found. The problems of internet connectivity and
lack of consistency between the image and the sound in the videos were stated
by students who were not happy at three different motivational stages. The
students who have high motivation stated that their satisfaction was because it
is free from time and space, suitable for reviews and provides effective
learning.
Furthermore, according to the study
of (Vaoana, 2018), Students that are somewhat and highly motivated receive
higher test results. The absence of variation in learning goal incentive
emphasizes the importance of grading assignments. When encouraging
students with online scientific teaching materials, online and college
students must apply the same teaching considerations as when developing teaching
process.
