Stress in the Workplace

By Academia PH Pressure at the workplace is unavoidable due to the demands of the contemporary work environment. Pressure perceived as acceptable by an individual, may even keep workers alert, motivated, able to work and learn, depending on the available resources and personal characteristics. However, when that pressure becomes excessive or otherwise unmanageable it leads to stress. Stress can damage an employees' health and the business performance. Work-related stress can be caused by poor work organization (the way we design jobs and work systems, and the way we manage them), by poor work design (for example, lack of control over work processes), poor management, unsatisfactory working conditions, and lack of support from colleagues and supervisors. Research findings show that the most stressful type of work is that which values excessive demands and pressures that are not matched to workers’ knowledge and abilities, where there is little opportunity to exercise any choice or...

Impact of Work-Related Stress To The Overseas Filipino Workers in Saudi Arabia and Middle East

By: Academic PH “I don’t know what went wrong. He rang up his wife on Sunday evening and said he was suffering from a severe headache and that he intended to kill himself, ” - His friend told Khaleej Times, a daily English language newspaper published in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. On 2017, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates took his own life by hanging himself inside his flat.   “G.L.,” a 31-year-old gas station employee, hanged himself from a ceiling fan using his necktie and leather belt.   According to a friend close to the deceased Filipino, he made a distressing call to his wife in the Philippines after finishing his graveyard duty on Sunday. Another friend said, “We are all sad. He was sometimes depressed but we advised him that things will be all right.” “He was a good basketball player, bodybuilder and maintained a good sense of humor. His mother works in Australia,” they echoed. (Catolico, 2017).   This is the...

Students's Readiness To Online Learning

By: Academia PH To respond to the challenge of innovating educational delivery mechanisms in higher education, colleges and universities across the globe ventured into different practices such as distance education, online teaching, remote learning, blended learning, and mobile learning amidst COVID19 pandemic,. In this Philippine context, according to Erwin et.al (2020) as published in Asia Journal of Distance Education, remote learning reveals a digital divide among Filipino students. This current situation in remote learning may most possibly exacerbate existing inequalities and may translate to barriers in online learning. For example, a cross-sectional study conducted nationwide reported that thirty-two percent (32 %) and twenty-two percent (22%) out of 3, 670 Filipino students surveyed have difficulties adjusting to new learning styles and do not have reliable internet access, respectively (Baticulon et al., 2020).          ...

Students's Motivation On Online Learning Affects Their Academic Outcome

By: Academia PH           According to Cherry (2020) the method of initiating, guiding, and maintaining goal-oriented activities is known as motivation. It's what motivates you to take action, whether it's having a drink of water to quench your appetite or reading a book to learn something new. The molecular, mental, social, and cognitive powers that trigger actions are all part of motivation. The word "motivation" is widely used in daily speech to explain why someone does something. It is the energy that propels human behavior.             There are two types of motivation Hennesey, et. al., (2015). Intrinsic motivation is the desire to do things only for the sake of doing so, for the pure pleasure of doing so. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is motivation to achieve an objective purpose or satisfy an externally defined constraint. Given the rise of the information economy, cultivating intri...

Social Isolation During Pandemic and Its Impact To Student's Learning

Image
By: Academia PH The emergence of COVID19 pandemic which was originated from China became the major problem of the year 2020.   It has altered people's way of life, creating an unparalleled threat to public health, closing of establishments, schools, and other societal needs. Students are mostly affected by the pandemic. Their education is compromised to ensure the safety and health of the students. In order to continue the education, the world adapts to a new normal learning modality where distance learning becomes the new mode of education. With the adoption of new normal learning modality, it is crucial to determine its advantages and disadvantages and assess students' preparation for new normal learning modality and forecast their progress (Doe, 2017).  Today, both research and teaching can be done with the use of online media (Engin, 2017).  In line with this, students, teachers, and other staff are faced with the problematic system of education that has bee...
